Behold Aherlow Revisited
Behold Aherlow Revisited is Michael Lynch’s personal and historical journey through the beautiful Glen of Aherlow. In his own words, Michael wanted to “tell everyone about the Glen, the mountains, the hills, the valley, the villages, its people and its places”. These places include Galbally, Lisvarrinane, Bansha, Ballinacourtie, Glencushabinna, Coach Road and many more. As well as the townlands, the author also covers the Glen’s ancient and sacred sites including St. Sedna’s Well, St. Berrihert’s Kyle, St. Peakaun’s Well Moor Abbey, Duntryleague and Christ the King statue. Starting with how the Glen was formed, Michael takes you on a historical and geographical adventure, combining his own memories, with local stories and detailed research.
Covering dramatics events from the Irish War of Independence such as the Knocklong Rescue to the internment of his father Paddy Lynch, Michael’s words and stories come directly from those involved. Owing to his close involvement with Muintir na Tire and its founder Canon Hayes, he describes how the local Muintir guilds started in Bansha, Aherlow and Galbally. Michael’s love of sport is evident in his book and he proudly outlines the achievements of local sports clubs and personalities
A must read for those interested in the Glen of Aherlow; its history and heritage. To quote Michael “The peace and serenity of the place will long live with you. You are certain to return. There is nowhere like this Glen, my wonderful magical Glen, the Glen of Aherlow”.

“When I came to the end of the first print of “Behold Aherlow”, I realized that it was almost a decade since it was published. Then rather than just reprint the original, I decided to revise and re-edit the book. Most of my research for the first edition was carried out in the late nineties. Many changes had taken place in the interim and thus I decided to put “fresh” pen to paper and update the happenings in the Glen during that time. Many old friends came to my assistance once again and my sincere thanks goes out on this occasion also to so many of those mentioned above. I am pleased to make special mention of my wife Betty, my sister Dympna and my desktop publishing assistant Michael O‘Connell for their painstaking editing work. My son John did a huge amount of work for me under many headings. Then there were those who performed invaluable key tasks , I am eternally grateful to them and amongst them were Jimmy Barry, Michael Cummins, Jim Fitzgerald, Roy Galvin, David Grogan, Theresa Lee, Pat Moroney, Helen Morrisey, Mark O’Brien, Stan O’Brien, Gerry Ring, Tim Ryan.”
Michael Lynch – 2011
“The first edition of Behold Aherlow was published in 2002. The author, my father Michael, passed away in December 2012. At the time, he was working on this updated version of his original book. My Dad seemed to know everyone and everywhere in the Glen and wanted to share its history and heritage with the world. As much as possible, I have tried to stay true to his vision for this book and I hope you enjoy it.”
